REICHSTAG RENOVATION,
NEW GERMAN PARLIAMENT

ARCHITECTURE . FOSTER + PARTNERS
YEAR . 1999
LOCATION . BERLIN, GERMANY

The transformation of the Reichstag focuses on four key elements: its role as a democratic forum, historical preservation, accessibility, and sustainability. The project respects the building's original fabric, revealing historical marks like stonemasons' imprints, preserving them as part of a "living museum." At the same time, the redesign introduces transparency, with activities visible from within. Both the public and politicians share entry, and the public can access a rooftop terrace and a dome, symbolizing democratic ascendancy. The dome, now a Berlin landmark, enhances natural lighting and ventilation, becoming a beacon at night that reflects the vitality of Germany’s democracy.
